March 5th-11th is Professional Pet Sitters Week – a great time to recognize the qualified, competent, and compassionate professional pet sitters in our area!

There’s no doubt that we love pampering our pets. According to the most recent data from the American Pet Products Association (APPA), pet services, which includes grooming, boarding, walking, training, pet sitting, exercise and yard services saw the largest growth again this year and more than tripled the growth percentage of any other category.

The booming pet-care industry is great for pet-sitters and owners alike. Pet sitters can look forward to a rewarding and profitable career, while pet owners have countless options for the care of their beloved furry family members. However, as Pet Sitters International’s Founder, Patti Moran suggests, the growth of the industry highlights the need to educate owners on the importance of hiring professional pet sitters.

As Moran explains, “Just because you’ve seen pet sitters in an online directory – or even a nationally–publicized site – doesn’t mean they are a legitimate, qualified pet-sitting business. Anyone can post a profile advertising pet-sitting services, so it’s importance for pet owners to take a closer look to ensure they are hiring ‘real pet sitters’ to care for their pets.”

Here in the DC metro area, The National Capital Area Professional Pet Sitters Network (NCAPPS) sets the standard for professional pet care services. It is the mission of the network to educate pet owners about responsible pet ownership and the benefits of professional pet sitting services. It is also the go-to trusted source for networking, mentoring, and resources for local professional pet-sitting businesses.
